Saxophonist and composer Elisabeth Lid Trøen, has played an active part in a whole host of musical projects and bands, and has worked with renowned musicians such as Marius Neset, Erlend Skomsvoll, Chris Potter, Jon Balke and Django Bates, to name but a few. Trøen has also written music for various ensembles and has experimented with a variety of musical genres and styles.

She is set to visit Maijazz with her work which was commissioned for Vossa Jazz, Jazzfest and Oslo Jazzfestival 2022 and entitled “New Paintings of Jazz”. The music was written specifically for her own quartet – the Trøen/Arnesen Quartet – which is a close collaboration featuring the esteemed pianist Dag Arnesen, as well as Ole Marius Sandberg on bass and Sigurd Steinkopf on drums. Together, the quartet represents a wide age span of musical expression, ranging from sources of inspiration such as Keith Jarrett and Edvard Grieg, to Norwegian melodic jazz and on to John Coltrane and Joe Henderson.

The title “New Paintings of Jazz” brings with it a desire to unite jazz with our present and our future, whilst preserving its traditional heritage. What happens when elements of post-bop and free jazz meet with melodic folk music and lyrical melody? This is the question which “New Paintings of Jazz” strives to answer through its music.
