He has captured the attention of the public all over the world with his personal and melodious interpretation of jazz music. And now, Tord Gustavsen is coming to Maijazz in a trio format.

Gustavsen has collaborated with numerous artists, including Solveig Slettahjell, Kristin Asbjørnsen, and Simin Tander. But it is the trio format which marks his very foundation. His previous trio albums, including “Changing Places”, “The Ground”, and “Being There”, received a resounding response from the public and critics alike. “The Ground” was the first instrumental album ever to reach the No. 1 spot on the VG charts in Norway. Gustavsen has been awarded the Spellemann Award, NOPA’s Music Prize for best popular musical composition, and numerous other distinctions. He is constantly searching for simplicity and beauty in every note he plays, and this has become one of his enduring hallmarks.

Tord Gustavsen will be appearing at this year’s festival with the highly acclaimed bass player Steinar Raknes, along with his faithful companion on all of his releases, drummer Jarle Vespestad. With a combination of powerful sensitivity and intense interaction, the trio delivers an atmosphere of melodious and innovative chamber jazz. Their music has been described as “wordless psalms” or “abstract gospel”, and every element finds its natural place in the new, yet familiar universe of Tord Gustavsen. The prominent melodic lines lead the way, whilst the meditative presence dictates what happens on stage.

As quite possibly one of Norway’s most popular jazz musicians, this is set to be a highly memorable evening of jazz entertainment at Stavangeren!
