The charismatic and dynamic saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin has made a name for herself on the American jazz scene as an instrumentalist with a style all of her own. She has shared the stage with a host of legendary artists, including Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys. As the band leader for Lakecia Benjamin & Soul Squad, she served up funky, floating soul jazz.
After several years in the urban jazz genre, she was ready to dive into some history. The album “Pursuance: The Coltranes”, released in 2020, is an engaging project in which Benjamin brought together the former Coltrane musicians – Ron Carter and Reggie Workman – as well as other musical greats such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marcus Gilmore, Jazzmeia Horn and Regina Carter, for two intense days in the studio spent lauding and reinterpreting John and Alice Coltrane.
It is this spiritual jazz which we can look forward to hearing on stage in Stavanger, when Lakecia Benjamin is accompanied by a solid quartet channelling the Coltranes’ musical spirit in the best possible way.
