Mai:Jazz is organised every year and has been conducted since 1989. It is one of the oldest festivals in the region. From its very beginning and today it is one of the biggest and boldest events. Mai:Jazz has been one of the most frequent events in Stavanger region. Like most cultural projects, Mai:Jazz also had a challenging beginning and we were not successful. We can proudly say that the festival is the result of a strong cooperation among talented artists, volunteer enthusiasts, supportive politicians, loyal sponsors and, of course ever-growing and competent audience. Everyone has played a crucial role in developing the festival into one of the country’s leaders in its category. Mai:Jazz is committed to playing a role in the exciting development and the challenge the Stavanger region faces.
Saying with the words of Sweden’s former culture ministers Bengt Göransson: “Culture is a source of depth, insight and commitment – lays the ground for social participation and democracy. Insight can change people who in turn can change the environment and the world. ” Mai:Jazz will contribute to music enjoyment, insight and reflection. Meanwhile it stands for good entertainment, good experiences and life in the city. We mean that made an impact on the regional cultural life with such artists as Jan Garbarek, Pat Metheney Group, Herbie Hancock, E.S.T, Joe Zawinul, Youssou N’dour just to name a few who visited Stavanger and Mai:Jazz.
We know we must constantly develop – Mai:Jazz wants to be a driving force in the cultural development of the region. In recent years, the established collaboration with the University of Stavanger has significantly accelerated. Bjergsted Jazz Ensemble is a cornerstone of the festival. The series «Close to a Hero» ( Blå Trå series by Stavanger Jazzforum) has become one of the most popular among the students of the Institute of Music and Dance / the University of Stavanger, Drama, Vågen high school in Sandnes, St. Svithun high school and Kulturskolen at Bjergsted that benefits the development of musicians, music life in the region and the audience.
One new addition to this development is the Spor: 5 stage. This stage has steered the Stavanger Jazz Forum and Mai:Jazz since 2015. We believe Spor: 5 will play an important role in the years to come. Long-term vision and quality – always quality – controls what we do.
