The Svein Olav Herstad Trio has long since consolidated its position in the topmost tier of the Norwegian jazz landscape. The trio oscillates between a poetic and laid-back vibe and an altogether more energetic and forward-looking beat. The pianist Herstad undoubtedly masters both the delicate and the dynamic genres. It has been commented that it is the synergy between Herstad’s ability to convey world-class phrasing, along with an extraordinarily well coordinated and driving rhythm section, that makes this particular trio something very special.
For this year’s Maijazz, this fine trio offers a particularly exciting collaboration. They are accompanied by Oslo Strings, who have established themselves as a leading string ensemble excelling at interacting with pop and rock artists. They challenge the boundaries defining how and where a string ensemble traditionally operates. Oslo Strings has collaborated with multiple major artists in recent years, including Sivert Høyem, Maria Mena, Vamp, Madrugada and Karpe.
