At this year’s Maijazz concert, the students attending the music program at Stavanger Cathedral School draw inspiration from their heroes. Each ensemble has chosen a jazz hero and created completely new musical arrangements of the originals. The results are personal, fresh and somewhat surprising.

You can expect to hear music by Chick Corea, Nina Simone, Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell. The grand finale will feature a full big band with swinging classics by Cole Porter and Chick. As if this wasn’t enough, you will also be treated to a performance by the superb vocal ensemble.

Welcome to a high-energy Maijazz experience!

Maijazz UNG is a regional skills development program, a festival within a festival, dedicated to developing children´s and young people’s interest in improvisation and jazz music. Maijazz UNG is for a 4-year-old in the audience, an 8-year-old who has just got his first trumpet, a 13-year-old who has been playing the drums for a while and an 18-year-old preparing to audition for a higher education in jazz – as well as everyone in between. Maijazz UNG combines breadth and immersion, with the goal of creating attentive, open-minded people and musicians. The participants get to experience particularly good, improvisation-related learning processes, a good starting point for future cultural interest.
