Just as folk musicians have always been, Benedicte Maurseth is open to her “here and now” and takes inspiration from alternative artistic and musical forms of expression along with her fellow band members. “Hárr” traverses multiple musical genres, encompassing Norwegian fiddle music, freely improvised music, American minimalism and a generous dash of musique concrète as a pillar in her compositions, interspersed with sounds of reindeer, birds, insects and tame reindeer herders from the Hardanger plateau.
The album version of “Hárr” was launched on the Hubro Records label in January 2022 and won Benedicte Maurseth the highly acclaimed Nordic Music Prize award. Maurseth transports some of the greatest names in Norwegian jazz with her on this journey:
Mats Eilertsen – on bass
Morten Qvenild – on grand piano
Håkon Stene – on percussion, vibraphone, and electronics.
Review featured in “Folkemusikk” magazine:
“An overwhelming journey. It takes courage to periodically allow silence to take centre stage in a specially commissioned musical work. Benedicte Maurseth has displayed that courage, and in doing so, has created a masterpiece. “
