Susanna has never been afraid of going beyond in her music creations. In her ‘Go Dig My Grave’ she gracefully combined such historical musical genres as traditional American folk and old English ballades with baroque instrumentation in her own distinctive vocal interpretation.
Take some Henry Purcell, some Lou Reed and Susanna’s own music, and get an album that shows Susanna’s unique character as a musician: ‘Go Dig My Grave’ is a strong personal collection of dark songs, with deep roots through centuries of American and European cultures.
‘Go Dig My Grave’ is a continuation of Susanna’s collaboration with Swiss baroque harpist Giovanna Pessi. Pessi was a part of Susanna’s album ‘Sonata mix Dwarf Cosmos’ (Rune Grammofon, 2007), and they collaborated on ‘If Grief Could Wait’ (ECM, 2011) which was highly acclaimed by critics – a deep dive into mournful music by Henry Purcell, Leonard Cohen and Susanna. The result of this collaboration appeared to be a dynamic band effortlessly mastering the movement from the simple folk feel of Elizabeth Cotten’s “Freight Train” to the cool beauty of Purcell’s “Cold Song” and the complex emotions of the age-old lament “The Willow Song”.
In 2018 and 2019, Susanna toured with these songs to the USA, Ireland, England, Switzerland, Belgium and Norway, performing at the Island Festival and the Molde Jazz Festival. Susanna is eager to bring her original cast to Mai:Jazz and you will hear songs from “Go Dig My Grave” and “If Grief Could Wait”, 2011.
