An open relationship with musical genres combined with a constant search for new ways of expression has led Sigurd Hole to a personal voice as both performer and composer. His first release in his own name, the solo double bass album “Elvesang”, was released in January 2018 bringing brilliant reviews around the world.
Norwegian folk music and minimalism classical music are important musical inspirations. Nature is also a fundamental driver. The music possesses an almost zen-like calm, and invites the listener into a deep listening focus.
On February 14, 2020, Sigurd released a new solo double bass album; the double album “Light / Darkness” (Lys/Mørke). The album was recorded on the island of Fleinvær outside Bodø, and has a special element of interaction with natural sounds on the island (wind, birds, waves). “Light / Darkness” (Lys/Mørke) was presented to the world on February 3 with an exclusive pre-release concert at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, New York.
– «Atmospheric solo bass» (Giovanni Russonello, The New York Times. Critics pick)
-«… an album of profound beauty» (John Kelman, allaboutjazz.com)
– Dagsavisen / Geir Rakvaag: A double album with only Kontrabass for 80 minutes could be a test. Sigurd Hole makes it a great experience.
