18th. February 2019 marked 50 years since Miles Davis´s recordings of July 1969, subsequently edited and released as the album “In a Silent Way.” The record contained two tracks which were the edited result of forty minutes of music; “Shhh/Peaceful” and “In a Silent Way/It´s about that Time”, each lasting for just under twenty minutes, graced either side of the LP released on 30th. July 1969. Miles Davis invited a number of young musicians to join him in the studio, and these musicians have all been instrumental in making a huge contribution to the history of jazz – Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul and two young British musicians by the names of Dave Holland and John McLaughlin. He was also accompanied by his close colleagues Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams who truly put their stamp on this “milestone” recording. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. The recording revolutionized not only the world of jazz music, but also rock, pop and contemporary modern music. Many people characterised “In a Silent Way” as a funk/rock experiment and as the beginning of Davis´s “Electric Period.”

May:jazz places great importance on presenting “live” jazz recordings which have made history within this particular music form. “In a Silent Way” is the first performance to pave the way and to do just that. In order to do justice to this “live” recording of such significance, May Jazz has commissioned a group of Norway´s greatest musicians: Tor Yttredal – saxophone, Simen Kiil Halvorsen – trumpet, Frode Alnæs – guitar, Audun Erlien – bass, Svein Olav Herstad – keyboards, Stein Inge Brækhus / Raymond S Lavik – perc / drums.

Rolling Stone Magazine had this to say about “In a Silent Way,” November 1969…

“But I believe there is a new music in the air, a total art which knows no boundaries or categories, a new school run by geniuses indifferent to fashion. Miles Davis is one of those geniuses!”
