In 2018 the Canadian composer and singer, Joni Mitchell, turned 75 years of age. Her milestone birthday also marked 50 years since the release of her first record, and she has been known as one of pop music´s greatest artists ever since. Her musical influence has had a very real impact upon the world of jazz. Joni has truly embraced jazz music and has collaborated with such musical icons as Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden and Herbie Hancock.
In 2018 the Oslo Jazz Festival paid tribute to Joni´s Jubilee. Anja Lauvdal, the up-and-coming musician from Flekkefjord, was asked to compose an ensemble for the special tribute concert. It proved a huge success, with two completely sold out events at the Opera. The success continued at both Nattjazz in Bergen and at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival with fully sold out concerts in both places! Anja Lauvdal is now coming to the May Jazz Festival 2020 with an amazing line-up of some of the greatest young Norwegian musicians to give Joni Mitchell all the credit that she so richly deserves.
The line-up will feature Anja Lauvdal, Musical Director/keyboards, Susanna Wallumrød, vocals, Rohey Taalah, vocals, Frida Ånnevik, vocals, Sondre Lerche, vocals, Hanna Paulsberg, saxophone, Heida Karine Johannesdottir, tuba, Torstein Lavik Larsen, trumpet, Christian Winter, guitar, Magnus Nergaard, bass, and Hans Hulbækmo on drums.
